Mediterranean Pizza Recipes that are Both Delicious and Nutritious

Apr 17, 2019

Who doesn’t love a great pizza? And there’s nothing quite like making pizza at home and having incredible aromas fill the air.

An authentic Mediterranean pizza is always filled with the true staples of the region. Mediterranean pizza ingredients utilize the foods and herbs of Italy, Spain, France, and Greece. These staple items include olives and olive oil, onions, garlic, oregano, cheese, seafood, chicken, pork, and vegetables.

You can be adventurous and use your own pizza dough, or make it easy on yourself and grab your favorite premade store crust. Remember, most of the flavors, and certainly, the creativity is in the toppings.

To get your creative juices flowing, here are a few easy to make Mediterranean pizza recipes. But remember, improvising in the kitchen is not only fun, but it also makes for a finished dish that perfectly suits your individual taste. So, don’t be afraid to switch these recipes up to your own liking.

Delicious and Nutritious Mediterranean Pizza Recipes

1. Simple Cheese, Salami, and Marinara Pizza

Simple Cheese, Salami, and Marinara Pizza

Choose your favorite crust and drizzle it with just a bit of extra virgin olive oil. Then, add chopped garlic, sea salt, oregano, and crushed red pepper. For extra flavor, be sure to cover the sides of the crust as well.

Top with shredded mozzarella cheese, pepperoni or salami (or both, if you prefer), and sliced red onions.

Bake in the oven according to crust directions. Afterward, let the pizza cool about 10 minutes before slicing. After it’s cooled, and just before slicing, sprinkle the pizza with grated parmesan and top with fresh, whole, basil leaves. (Timing is everything: basil will turn black if the pizza is too hot). This pizza smells heavenly and tastes delicious.

Now, pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy!

2. No Sauce Mediterranean Pizza

Cover your pizza dough in extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, dried Italian seasonings, and crushed garlic. Top with wedges of fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced onions, colored bell peppers, sun-dried tomatoes (they are packed with flavor), and thinly sliced prosciutto.

This pizza doesn’t need a red sauce. The olive oil, herbs, cheese, and intense flavor of the sun-dried tomatoes and prosciutto make it amazing!

3. Thick French Bread Cheese Pizza

Take your favorite loaf of French bread, and slice it lengthwise. Cover each half with marinara, a sprinkling of sea salt, and dried oregano. Then add generous portions of sliced provolone, top with grated parmesan, and broil in the oven as you would garlic bread — just until the pizza begins to bubble. This recipe is simple and delicious.

4. Seafood Pizza

Cover your crust with extra virgin olive oil, chopped garlic, and a sprinkle of sea salt. Then, add shredded mozzarella cheese, red onion slices, artichoke hearts, and your choice of salmon or shrimp. Bake according to crust directions. Let the pizza cool about 10 minutes before slicing. While you wait, pour a glass of your favorite white wine.

5. Individual Pizzas

For fun family, night or social get-together, purchase mini pizza crusts in multiples at your local grocery store. Then, place bowls of various Mediterranean ingredients on a prep surface: olives, onions, chopped garlic, cheeses, artichoke hearts, meats, seafood, and robust sun-dried tomatoes.

Don’t forget to bring out the olive oil, marinara, and herbs. Then, open the wine, put on some background music, and let everyone discover their creative side — Mediterranean style.
