Is Frozen Food Actually Healthy for You?

It is a common thought that frozen foods are always processed and of lesser quality than their fresh counterparts. For instance, experts have stated that from the moment when fruits and vegetable are picked from the vine, they begin losing nutritional value quickly. When comparing fresh to frozen, fresh produce is often picked long before being ripe in order to account for transport time, meaning there is a long time for the product to lose its nutritional value. Frozen produce is picked either much closer to being ripe or when it is ripe and frozen almost immediately, this helps lock in a much higher percentage of nutrients. If your food is nutritious before being frozen, it will be after.

Healthy vs Unhealthy Frozen Products

Part of the unhealthy stigma comes from the fact that frozen pizzas, snacks and other products are found right next to the healthy foods in the freezer section. To support the fact that frozen produce is on par with fresh, the FDA announced that there is “virtually no difference” in the nutritional content between the two. When it comes to fruits, vegetables and others, freezing is essential for applying a “Pause” button to nature’s natural processes.

So, the next time you take a trip to your grocery store, take a stroll down the frozen food aisles and pick up some healthy options to fill your freezer with. You will find that frozen foods and meals can be extremely quick in preparation and more nutritious than that desperate trip to the fast food restaurant.
